🌍 Strengthening Pastoralists’ Rights in Eastern & Southern Africa with UNDROP 🐪🐄WAMIP, in partnership with CETIM – a centre dedicated to supporting social movements in accessing UN human rights mechanisms – has just completed a regional training for our Eastern & Southern Africa members on how to implement the UN Declaration on the Rights of Peasants and Other People Working in Rural Areas (UNDROP). What is UNDROP?Adopted by the UN in December 2018 after 17 years of intense negotiations, UNDROP is a historic milestone in codifying and protecting the rights of peasants, pastoralists, nomadic and transhumant communities, and all rural workers — the very people who are too often the first victims of poverty, hunger, and rights violations, yet play a key role in protecting biodiversity, fighting climate change, and feeding the world. About the TrainingOver five weeks, participants: 1️⃣ Completed self-paced modules on the history of UNDROP and its key rights. 2️⃣ Took part in interactive Zoom sessions with breakout discussions, analysing real cases of pastoralist rights violations from their own countries. 3️⃣ Developed practical tools and strategies to advocate for UNDROP’s implementation at local, national, and regional levels.By the end, WAMIP members were not only empowered to defend their own rights and train others, but had also formulated concrete action plans to tackle the violations they face — embedding UNDROP at the heart of their advocacy and community strategies. This way, UNDROP becomes not just a declaration on paper, but a practical tool for action, justice, and lasting change.#UNDROP #Pastoralists #HumanRights #FoodSovereignty #WAMIP #CETIM #RuralJustice #EasternAfrica #SouthernAfrica #Pastoralism
