🌐 Land is the very basis of life for communities worldwide – but under widespread corporate control, it has become a backdrop for land grabs and speculation, leading to massive dispossession and ecosystem destruction. Today, on the International Day of Peasant Struggles, we are launching a series of articles about the people and movements that are fighting to reclaim their right to land around the world. In 2012, the Committee on World Food Security published the so-called ā€˜Tenure Guidelines’ which outline the states’ obligations to ensure everyone’s right to land. However, the guidelines have failed to address the structural issues behind the displacement and dispossession of communities, which has systematically worsened with the growing financialization of land.šŸ½ In response, last year, an alliance of small scale food producers and fishers, pastoralists, Indigenous peoples and civil society issued the ā€˜We Belong to the Land’ campaign, which calls for agrarian reform and the re-centering of the right to land as a social, political and environmental emergency. In this #LandStruggleSeries, we build on this campaign by showcasing people’s struggles and strategies worldwide as key steps towards systemic transformation. Read the essays via the link in our bio.
