Today, we want to acknowledge Maamankhuu Sodnom, a pastoralist from Mongolia and co-founder of WAMIP After a lifetime of herding, Maamankhuu turned her experience into collective action, joining pastoralists from across the world to organise for their rights and make their voices heard. She now represents Central Asian pastoralists on WAMIP's Governing Council, bringing the realities and struggles of grassroots pastoralist communities into global spaces. As FAO features her story for the International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists 2026, we want to recognise Maamankhuu's contributions to building our movement and strengthening the voices of pastoralist women. Her journey is a reminder that our movement is built by pastoralists themselves, from the ground up, by those who organise, share their knowledge, and stand together to defend their livelihoods, territories and ways of life #Pastoralism #IYRP26 #PastoralistRights #LandRights

Last week, WAMIP's Global Coordinator and representative for West Asia, Khalid Khawaldeh, took part in New York Climate Week.Among the sessions he joined was "Beyond Carbon Payments: Understanding the Co-Benefits of Jurisdictional REDD+ Benefit Sharing", which brought together Indigenous Peoples and local communities, governments, researchers and practitioners to discuss what climate finance can mean for the people and territories at the heart of conservation efforts. The discussion focused on how climate finance can go beyond carbon payments to strengthen local governance and territorial rights, promote inclusive participation, support environmental resilience, and ensure that communities meaningfully benefit from conservation efforts. For us, these conversations are important because climate action cannot be reduced to carbon accounting or financial transactions. Climate solutions must be equitable and centred on the rights, knowledge and leadership of local communities. This means protecting pastoralist rights and livelihoods and ensuring their voices are heard.WAMIP will continue fighting for climate justice with pastoralists and local communities at the centre!
