WORLD ALLIANCE OF MOBILE INDIGENOUS PEOPLES & PASTORALISTS
During the second week of March, WAMIP members Manoj Mishra and Verdiana Camilla Morando attended and participated in the “Pastoralism, Uncertainty and Development Policy'' workshop organized by PASTRES – a European Research Council funded research project hosted at the Institute of Development Studies (UK) and the European University Institute (Italy). Our members applied their knowledge in order to explore how developmental policy can better support pastoralists’ needs and capacities to work with uncertainty. Additionally, the event brought together individuals from Ethiopia, Kenya, Tunisia, India, Italy and China at the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI) campus in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Stakeholders such as policymakers, experts from intergovernmental organizations, public officials, pastoralist representatives and researchers engaged in discussions working for sustainable pastoralism development by linking research to policy. PASTRES PI Professor Ian Scoones opened the workshop with a speech followed by four presentations with the following themes – Mobility and migration, Land and the environment, Markets and livelihoods and Social protection and insurance – followed by open discussions and Q&A. The Monday (6/3) session proposed extensive livestock systems that embrace uncertainty and challenge conventional policy ideas, promoting a new perspective on livestock and climate change, biodiversity protection and pastoral development. Alongside the workshop, the PASTRES photo exhibition, An Uncertain World, was showcased, reflecting international dimensions of pastoralism and responses to uncertainty. For pastoralists navigating environmental changes and diminishing resources, uncertainty is the only constant. This collection of photos and text, edited and designed by Roopa Gogineni, portrays this sentiment by highlighting the need for transportation infrastructure, innovative technology, market regulations, identity continuity, and negotiating authority.
