WORLD ALLIANCE OF MOBILE INDIGENOUS PEOPLES & PASTORALISTS
In September 2025, WAMIP Regional Coordinator for Central Africa, Ali Aii Shatou, representing MBOSCUDA, together with representatives of CEBEVIRHA, ECCAS, government ministries, researchers, and pastoralist organizations, organized an international colloquium in the Lake Chad region. One of the key objectives of the colloquium was to assess the operationalization and implementation of the 2019 N’Djamena Declaration. The 2019 N’Djamena Declaration marked a significant commitment by Central African countries and countries of the Lake Chad and Sahel interface to a unified approach to managing pastoral mobility and related conflicts. It acknowledged that regional transhumance has “long played a role in maintaining the economic and food balances of the Sahelian regions,” while recognizing the need to guide these dynamics with “greater consideration of security issues, wildlife and flora management, and the growing degradation of ecosystems resulting from climate change.”At the International Colloquium on the Implementation of Pastoral Transhumance Policies, representatives reaffirmed that pastoral transhumance is far from fragile and is instead “a driver of cohesion, resilience, and shared prosperity when managed inclusively and collectively.”Participants recommended operationalizing and strengthening the N’Djamena Declaration through permanent governance structures, monitoring frameworks, coordinated fundraising, and renewed high-level political engagement within ECCAS and its member states. They also called for a harmonized regional strategy on cross-border transhumance, with coordinated international support and dedicated leadership to address related security, environmental, and socio-economic challenges.WAMIP welcomes these recommendations and looks forward to future engagements and partnerships across West and Central Africa that strengthen pastoral transhumance.#Pastoralism #Transhumance #PastoralMobility #NDjamenaDeclaration #PastoralCommunities #CentralAfrica #Sahel #LakeChadBasin #RegionalCooperation #CrossBorderGovernance #ClimateResilience #PeaceAndSecurity #FoodSystems #BiodiversityProtection #InclusiveDevelopment
