WAMIP expresses its strong solidarity with the Maasai villagers affected by the proposed eviction of about 70,000 indigenous Maasai pastoralists located in Loliondo Division of Ngorongoro District, Arusha Region, east of the Serengeti National Park, and their more than 200,000 head of livestock, goes against the respect for their rights, dignity, cultural identity and livelihoods.
This will certainly lead to conflict, violence, poverty and marginalization, just to satisfy the whims of few families who have no regard for the custodians of wildlife and rich biodiversity. Indeed, according to reports, the plan to evict the Maasai is to lease their land to Otterlo Business Corporation to be used as a wildlife hunting ground for the Dubai royal families who own the company.
The appeal by members in Tanzania to her Excellency revealed that: “This action by the Tanzanian government is contrary to the Village Lands Act of 1999 and the Tanzanian government’s international human rights obligations and commitments.”
