WAMIP member Hanwant Singh has been working with Raika breeders to prepare for the International Year of Camelids (IYC), determined by the UN to take place next year in 2024. Members of the Camelid biological family, i.e., camels, llamas, alpacas, vicuñas and guanacos, are a critical source of livelihood for millions of families – particularly pastoralists. The IYC24 is an incredible opportunity to increase global awareness about the ecological, economic and cultural significance of camelids to promote conservation efforts and sustainable use of these animals. Additionally, the Year is meant to help stimulate research and innovation in camelid management, leading to the development of new technologies and techniques for their care and use. While the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN prepares for 2024, different stakeholders, including governments, NGOs, local communities and international organizations – such as the League of Pastoral Peoples – raise awareness for IYC. Undoubtedly, camelids play an integral role in protecting ecosystems, conserving biodiversity, adapting to climate change and maintaining food security. The IYC24 urges both the public and policymakers to promote actions that promote the well-being and conservation of camelids.
