WORLD ALLIANCE OF MOBILE INDIGENOUS PEOPLES & PASTORALISTS
WAMIP stands in solidarity with the ongoing battle for human and land rights the Massai people of Tanzania are fighting. The Maasai have historically been guardians of the Serengeti ecosystem in Tanzania, but are now faced with systematic marginalization and violent eviction from their ancestral lands. Vital social services, including healthcare, are being withheld to drive the Maasai from their homes, marking these events as human rights atrocities. However, the Maasai are not alone in this fight for their human and constitutional rights. The Pastoralists Indigenous Non-Governmental Organisation's Forum (PINGO's Forum), a coalition of 53 indigenous peoples' organizations, stands in solidarity with them. PINGO's Forum was established in 1994, bringing together pastoralist and hunter-gatherer communities to advocate for their land rights and development. Now, a Maasai delegation is traveling to Europe, supported by numerous NGOs and civil society organizations united in their solidarity with the Maasai people. Together, they strive to raise global awareness and give a voice to the Maasai, who have been unjustly criminalized by the Tanzanian government in the name of conservation. The delegations’ mission is to advocate for policy changes that enable Maasai communities to coexist harmoniously with their land and wildlife, free from forced evictions and human rights abuses. The misconception that these traditional ways of life harm the environment must be dispelled, as indigenous and migratory groups have long shaped and protected nature and biodiversity in their respective lands.Join WAMIP in supporting the Maasai delegation's cause! Together, we can amplify their voices, foster international solidarity, and work towards a future where the Maasai can thrive in their ancestral lands, preserving their way of life while protecting the environment. Let us stand united against forced evictions and human rights violations, and promote policies that honor the rights of indigenous communities.
