WORLD ALLIANCE OF MOBILE INDIGENOUS PEOPLES & PASTORALISTS
WAMIP’s members are pastoralist peoples whose livelihoods rely on the management and control of many primary global food resources, particularly livestock. They are especially impacted by a lack of food security and sovereignty, and we engage in many international events to represent their views on these topics. Two such events were the FAO’s World Food Day and World Food Forum. World Food Day was celebrated on the 16th of October of this year and was followed by the World Food Forum, which ended on the 20th of October. World Food Day focused on the preservation and distribution of potable water, but the WFF focused more broadly on food security and management and the importance of collaboration with younger generations. WAMIP had members in attendance at the WFF, some of whom hosted the Boaššu FoodLab and contributed their knowledge and experience to the Forum. In the wake of the WFF, the International Planning Committee for Food Sovereignty (IPC) released a statement criticising the representatives who were present at the conference. They critique World Food Day and the WFF for promoting the food sovereignty and management views of institutions and corporations instead of the views of local organisations, indigenous peoples and small-scale food producers. This selection of representatives does not accurately reflect the views of the global community and sidelines more inclusive international governing bodies. The IPC would like to discuss this problem with the FAO in the hopes of giving small producers and organisations their voices back on the global stage. WAMIP whole-heartedly supports the IPC’s statement, and we reaffirm the importance of providing a platform for the traditionally-marginalised groups that play a key role in managing our global food resources. We encourage all our readers to get involved with us and with the IPC to support the agenda of food sovereignty and security amongst indigenous peoples, local organisations, and small-scale food producers.
