But does that mean going vegan is the only way to save the planet? Amidst current food prices crisis and in the way towards @cop27_egypt , we want to spark a wider discussion about ways of farming and raising livestock that can regenerate ecosystems, cool the planet, and protect the rights of marginalised communities. In industrial livestock rearing, animals usually spend their short lives confined in small areas where they are fed industrially produced crops like corn and soy. The ecological costs of this system are huge: from concentrated animal waste and the production of grain for animals (instead of people) to the emissions associated with transporting both feed and meat around the world. But there are other ways of raising animals that make use of variable landscapes by moving animals and managing their grazing. This is called pastoralism.Pastoralism provides livelihoods for many millions of people and makes use of rangelands across more than half the world’s land surface. It relies on close and caring relationships between people and animals, and it can provide important insights on how to live in unpredictable and changing environments. Our new primer shows how pastoralists can be at the forefront of tackling and responding to climate change.Read the primer: https://www.tni.org/en/publication/livestock-climate-and-the-politics-of-resources WAMIP
