What is it

More than an event — a pastoralist movement taking the lead.

Across the world's rangelands, we, pastoralists, have sustained ecosystems, cultures, and food systems for generations. Yet our lands are being taken, our mobility is being restricted, and decisions about our future continue to be made without us. The World Pastoralist Assembly is where our movement comes together to organize, build solidarity across continents, and turn our collective strength into political action. Together, we raise one powerful voice to defend our rights, our territories, our mobility, and our way of life.

WAMIP is the only global grassroots pastoralist movement uniting organizations of mobile Indigenous Peoples. Since 2007, we have been building collective power to challenge injustice, defend pastoralist rights, and ensure that nothing about pastoralists is decided without pastoralists. The World Pastoralist Assembly is where we strengthen our movement, shape our collective agenda, and lead the decisions that affect our lives and our future.

"No policies for pastoralists without pastoralists. No future for rangelands without pastoralist peoples."
Where & when

From all regions of the world, one united pastoralist voice.

The International Year of Rangelands and Pastoralists (IYRP 2026) brings pastoralists and rangelands to the centre of global conversations on climate, biodiversity, and sustainable futures.

Following the Global Pastoralist Gathering, WAMIP invites pastoralist leaders, women, youth, and allies from around the world to come together in Mongolia for the World Pastoralist Assembly — a space for collective reflection, dialogue, and strategy-building to strengthen the global pastoralist movement.

We, pastoralists, protect more than livelihoods,
we protect ecosystems.

1

We defend our territories

Our territories are under pressure from land grabbing, mining, industrial agriculture, and false climate solutions. We organize to defend them.

2

We keep the land alive

Healthy rangelands are not created by projects. They are sustained every day through pastoralism, our ancestral knowledge, and our relationship with the land.

3

We defend food sovereignty

Communities have the right to decide how food is produced. Pastoralism offers an alternative to industrial food systems that destroy ecosystems and livelihoods.

4

We fight for our rights

Pastoralists are not disappearing. We organize to defend our lands, our mobility, our cultures, and our collective rights.
